KK Park constitutes one of several scam centers situated on the border frontier

The Burmese junta states it has taken control of among the most infamous scam complexes on the boundary with Thai territory, as it reclaims key area lost in the current civil war.

KK Park, positioned south of the boundary community of Myawaddy, has been synonymous with online fraud, financial crime and human trafficking for the past five years.

Countless people were lured to the compound with promises of lucrative positions, and then coerced to run sophisticated scams, extracting countless millions of money from victims across the world.

The armed forces, historically stained by its connections to the deception operations, now declares it has taken the complex as it expands authority around Myawaddy, the primary trade link to Thailand.

Junta Progress and Strategic Objectives

In the past few weeks, the armed forces has driven back insurgents in various areas of Myanmar, seeking to maximise the number of territories where it can hold a planned poll, starting in December.

It still lacks authority over significant territories of the state, which has been divided by hostilities since a military coup in February 2021.

The vote has been rejected as a fake by anti-junta elements who have sworn to obstruct it in areas they occupy.

Beginnings and Growth of KK Park

KK Park started with a lease agreement in the beginning of 2020 to construct an industrial park between the ethnic organization (KNU), the rebel group which controls much of this territory, and a obscure Hong Kong listed company, Huanya International.

Researchers think there are relationships between Huanya and a influential Chinese underworld figure Wan Kuok Koi, better known as Broken Tooth, who has since funded further deception hubs on the border.

The facility developed swiftly, and is easily noticeable from the Thai side of the border.

Those who succeeded to get away from it describe a brutal system enforced on the thousands, many from African nations, who were confined there, forced to operate extended shifts, with abuse and assaults applied on those who were unable to achieve objectives.

Current Actions and Claims

A declaration by the regime's communications department stated its personnel had "cleared" KK Park, freeing over 2,000 workers there and seizing 30 of Elon Musk's Starlink internet equipment – commonly used by deception hubs on the border boundary for online activities.

The statement accused what it called the "militant" KNU and volunteer resistance groups, which have been combating the military since the coup, for wrongfully controlling the area.

The military's declaration to have closed this infamous scam centre is very likely directed at its main supporter, China.

Beijing has been urging the regime and the Thailand administration to increase efforts to stop the unlawful businesses run by China-based syndicates on their common boundary.

Previously in the year thousands of China-based employees were taken out of scam compounds and flown on special flights back to China, after Thai authorities restricted access to power and petroleum resources.

Larger Situation and Persistent Functions

But KK Park is merely one of at least 30 similar complexes situated on the boundary.

The majority of these are under the control of ethnic Karen militia groups associated to the junta, and many are currently functioning, with tens of thousands running frauds inside them.

In fact, the assistance of these paramilitary forces has been crucial in enabling the junta push back the KNU and additional opposition organizations from territory they seized over the previous 24 months.

The junta now controls the vast majority of the highway joining Myawaddy to the rest of Myanmar, a objective the regime set itself before it conducts the first stage of the election in December.

It has taken Lay Kay Kaw, a new town founded for the KNU with Asian investment in 2015, a era when there had been hopes for enduring stability in the Karen region following a national ceasefire.

That constitutes a more significant defeat to the KNU than the seizure of KK Park, from which it obtained a certain amount of revenue, but where the majority of the economic benefits were directed to regime-supporting militias.

A informed contact has suggested that fraud operations is continuing in KK Park, and that it is possible the junta took control of just a portion of the large-scale compound.

The source also believes Beijing is giving the Burmese armed forces rosters of Asian people it wants taken from the fraud complexes, and returned back to face trial in China, which may explain why KK Park was attacked.
